Book Presentation: The Great Woman Singer

Gender and Voice in Puerto Rican Music

NYU professor Licia Fiol-Matta presents and reads from her new book, The Great Woman Singer: Gender and Voice in Puerto Rican Music. This book traces the careers of four iconic Puerto Rican singers - Myrta Silva, Ruth Fernandez, Ernestina Reyes, and Lucecita Benitez - while exploring how their voices and performance style transformed the public perception of the female vocalist in popular music. The book presentation and signing will be interspersed with song by vocalist Jeannie Sol accompanied by guitarist Yasser Tejada. Ms. Sol is coming to us courtesy of Teatro SEA, where she is currently performing in their show La Gloria - an award winning Latin cabaret celebrating La Sonora Matancera and it's stars Myrta Silva, Daniel Santos, and Celia Cruz.
