Each year we cap our Bronx Rising! series with a concert that features holiday traditions from two of the Bronx’s Latino communities: Puerto Rican and Garifuna. This year we look at traditional forms that use stringed instruments. We’ll be treated to the guitar traditions of the Garifuna with a focus on the various styles from the different communities in Belize, Honduras, and Guatemala. From Puerto Rico, we’ll learn about the cuatro, a mandolin-type instrument, and the national instrument of Puerto Rico. The cuatro is used in the repertoire of the songs of la música jíbara (music of the countryside). La música jíbara consists of songs like the aguinaldo, a Christmas song style unique to Puerto Rico, and the seis, which originally was a popular form of music listened to throughout the year, but now has been regulated to the holiday season. Admission Fee $7.00 | Reduced Fee: $5 for students and Intervale Green residents | Children under 12 free. Co-sponsored by City Lore.
