Jazz Appreciation & National Poetry Month

In Catalonia, Spain, April 23rd is Sant Jordi Day, observed by giving gifts of books and roses. April 23rd is also International Book Day, a worldwide commemoration of the anniversary of the deaths of Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare. And because April is both Jazz Appreciation Month and National Poetry Month, we are bringing it all together with a jazzy literary Bronx Rising! The evening begins with a poetry reading by poet and spoken word artist Rebecca Rivera, paying tribute to Cervantes and Shakespeare. We follow with another installment of our Maxine Sullivan Women in Jazz Series: music with a literary emphasis, by the group Poems & Strings led by jazz pianist Carolina Calvache. To add to the celebration, we'll be giving books to readers of all ages! Admission: $7 | $5 for students and IG residents | FREE for kids 12 and under. Co-sponsor, City Lore.
